Pre-Contact Hawaii Stone Poi Pounder w/Coral Encrustation
Found in 1930s Waikiki -
- Measures 5 1/4" in height, approximately 3 1/4" at its widest
- Made ofa dense grey basalt
- Painstakingly shaped using lithic technology
- Knobbed style and of pestle form: "flares less at the lower end, which gives the neck and body a more cylindrical shape and lessens the diameter of the pounding, or under, surface. The pestle form of pounder differs from true pestles in that there is always some flaring at the lower end, whereas pestles are not flared." Taken from Sir Peter Buck's Arts & Crafts of Hawaii
