Neal Adams Strange Adventures #212 Deadman (1968) Cover Stat/Original Art:
$4250.00

For offer is the stat/original art by Neal Adams for his historic silver age cover to Strange Adventures #212 (June 1968) featuring Deadman. This is one of Adams\' most famous covers, notably for how it broke with convention and used a smaller, lower, off-center logo. This enabled Adams to have a larger image across the entire cover, something which was virtually unheard of for superhero comics of the 1960s.
This piece is primarily a stat that has been glued on to a DC cover art board that has the DC logo and the Comics Code logo pre-printed on it. The stat is extended by original art that extends the image on both the right margin (by about one inch) and the bottom (by about 1.25 inches on the bottom). The art has also been extended on the left margin by a very small amount. About 3 inches of the stat/art on the left margin has broken off, revealing the glue residue underneath. I have been unable to determine whether this added original art was done by Adams or by another DC staffer. There is no original art underneath the stat.
I have been unable to find any discussion in the fandom and comics history literature about the background to the production of this historic cover. I can only surmise that the decision about the full image and location of the logo was made after Adams drew an initial cover. The image then had to be extended by this combination of stat and more original art. That would explain this combination of stat and art as well as the fact that the art is extended mostly on two sides--in effect, allowing the image to be moved up on the cover.
This cover shows wear from the previous owner or owners, particularly around the edges. There was no logo with this art when I acquired it in 1978. There is still glue residue from where the logo was on the stat. This can be seen in the photos. There is also white out to show the movement of the hook against Deadman\'s face. The art also has about a dozen pin holes on the top left and the top right where someone displayed it. The balloons are pasted on top of the stat. The glue on the back of the stat is in tact and keeps the image on the art board; however, some edges of the stat are not glued down, so it is possible to see under the stat.
The art/stat is on standard sized DC Strathmore cover board (11.5 inches x 17.5 inches); there is an embossed Strathmore logo on the bottom left corner of the art. The back of the art has the Comics Code Authority stamp, dated January 6, 1968, indicating that this was the art/stat approved prior to printing. The final printed cover had two changes from this art. First, the stat/art has a May publication date, which was changed to June. There is a handwritten notation of June on the top right, indicating this correction. Second, the printed cover did not make full use of the extended original art. Comparing this stat/art to the final printed cover shows that the printed version \"zoomed in\" a bit on the right and bottom.
This piece has been in my collection since 1978. Over the years, I have asked numerous dealers and educated collectors about their estimates of this piece\'s value. I have gotten estimates that range all over the map. While it is difficult to estimate the value of any comic art, it is particularly difficult with this since it is not entirely stat nor entirely original art. As I mentioned, it is much more stat than original art. However, it is the final art used for review by the Comics Code Authority and then production.
