Rare Monumental Brass Rubbing of Sir William Prelatte & Wife 1962 - LARGE:
$199.00

This is an authentic brass rubbing of one of the "monumental brasses", featuring Sir William Prelatte and one of his wives. The brass itself dates to 1462, and rubbings of it appear to be rare.Other examples appear in the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford and the Spurlock Museum at the University of Illinois. This brass rubbing is dated 1962 and inscribed "Sir William Prelatte and one wife, SmSwank (?), Cirencester, Parish Church, 13 June 62" in the bottom left corner (see photo). This rubbing was done before authorities began to ban the practice in the 1970s in order to preserve the detail of the brasses.
The brass rubbing has been mounted on wood and framed, as seen in the main photo. There are a couple of old tape marks on it, one under the left ear of Lady Prelatte and one under the right arm of Sir William. Overall it appears to be in good vintage condition. We are happy to provide additional photos ifdesired.
The original brass features two wives, but this rubbing has only one of them. This was likely due to the size of paper available to the maker. Still, this is a very large piece at 30" wide by 40" high including frame.
