In normal use, it functions as a regular whistle, but when the chain is pulled, the movement of the spring-loaded internal piston causes the tone to go up and down. In most cases, this was done to indicate a fire or some other emergency.They are quite effective and someone once said that when the pitch gets high enough, you hear it with your spine instead of your ears. With a little practice (and some ear protection), you can play simple tunes with this whistle.
