History: Korea was a \"police action\" overseen by the United Nations. It is often referred to as the forgotten war. Many GIs who served in WWII were recalled as retreads for the Korean War (or Police Action, as it was sadly referred to by our politicians). Korea was a long, hard slog in mountainous terrain and brutal winter weather conditions. Almost 40,000 US servicemen and women were killed in action. It was a merciless, no quarter, up close and personal combat that involved the US, Republic of Korea and a number of United Nations troops against the Communist North Koreans and Communist Chinese.

Initially after being overrun and totally rolled back to the sea (the Pusan Perimeter) by North Korea’s surprise offensive, General MacArthur brilliantly landed our Marines behind the North Koreans with the Inchon landings and took back Seoul. MacArthur then drove the North Koreans back across the 38th Parallel.

The Chinese Communists illegally entered the war, surprised the United Nations Forces, and drove our forces back once again. We then launched a counteroffensive regaining most all of the original ground that was lost. The War then settled into a long, bloody stalemate. The Korean War, actually, only has had a truce to halt the fighting. The issue of peace never wholly resolved, and we are technically still at war with North Korea.
