Bentonite and montmorillonite are used interchangeably

Bentonite contains a balance of minerals in their natural colloidal form, making it easily assimilated. These minerals enhance the production of enzymes in all living organisms.

Bentonite enhances water quality, replenishes and enhances the minerals in your water that have been depleted, either by your local utilities or by excessive filtration, and remove certain wastes. Bentonite improves the lustre and skin quality of koi as well as heightening the color. Added to food it is claimed to aid digestion and increase the koi’s ability to assimilate the vitamins and minerals required in their diet.

Bentonite enhances the color, luster and activity of any fish, not just koi. So whatever kind of fish you keep in your backyard pond they will be happy you added bentonite to their environment.

Koi keepers have always acknowledged that bentonite is necessary to replace the natural minerals lacking in koi ponds and lost by the filtration process. The koi in Japan are grown in mud ponds and due to the mineral content of the clay they thrive and are able to develop to their full potential before being harvested.

Natural mud ponds are lined with bentonite to seal them. It was also discovered that feeding small quantities to koi and occasionally bathing then in it or adding regulated dosages to the pond resulted in wonderful and significant effects on their color and luster.

The minerals in bentonite are composed of hydrous aluminum silicates in extremely small particles. They take up water between their layers, causing swelling, and change the interlayer spacing according to the mineral variety. In addition to inorganic exchange reactions, they react with and absorb some organic liquids, like amines, dissolved organic compounds DOCS, glycols, glycerols, and other polyhydric alcohols. This results in the removal of some harmful substances from your water.

For the koi hobbyist bentonite is used directly in the pond water each week in the recommended dosage. The pond will clear in about in a few hours, depending on the amount of organic material in the pond, but the bentonite will remain active and will make the water sparkling clear. Don't be worried in a new pond if the water does not clear in a day or two.

Bentonite can also be mixed with food. Some fanciers moisten the pellets and roll them in bentonite and some just mix the powder with paste type foods. This is an excellent idea because it simulates the koi feeding continuously off mineral rich particles on the floor of mud dams.

In Malaysia and other parts of the world there has been a surge of koi aquaculture and many of the ponds are concrete, plastic or rubber and as a result the colors on the koi are more subdued. But after regular use of bentonite you should be able to see that skin luster is improved, white skin becomes whiter, colors become brighter, the koi's appetite will increase and water quality will improve.

Bentonite clay also aids digestion, helps to reduce solid waste products in the water and traps unwanted non-nutritive substances such as pesticides and other potentially harmful substances. The scum on the pond can be reduced and perhaps eliminated by using bentonite.

Testimonials

Since the introduction of Goldfish Koi Pond Powder in February 2002 we have had countless numbers of people using our product and sending in photos and positive response. Please read a few for yourself. Beth

I absolutely had to write you to thank you for your wonderful Bentonite Powder!!
I have several water gardens, and have had to actually get rid of one of my bigger ones because they were just getting too hard to take care of.
I couldn't keep them clean no matter what I did or what product I used, or what they promised they would do (and didn't!).
I just found it too overwhelming to keep up with them.
I had to clean my main pond with goldfish in it several times in the Summer, which is an all day job, not to mention the stress it causes on my poor fish.
A few weeks ago I cleaned my biggest pond...again...only to have that nasty green pea soup algae come back in 2-3 days. I was so disappointed.
It just seemed hopeless, then I found you on and tried your product...UNBELIEVABLE!!!
I used it every other day as instructed and within 3 days I could already start to see my fish (They had been unable to see AT ALL due to the bad algae.
Within about 2 weeks after repetitive treatment, my water was and continues to be crystal clear. My fish are happier than ever and my plants are all thriving.
My filter was full of the nasty green and brown stuff and is even working better now.
I am attaching a couple pics I took to show you how clean my water is after 2 weeks.
The first pic was taken about 3 days after I started using your product (it had already started to work, my water was actually worse than this even) and the next was around 2 weeks after.
THANK you so much, I have even gotten another order for my Mom's pond. She has forever had problems too. You have one happy, satisfied customer here.
And if anyone's water is so nasty and stinky that you can't even begin to see within an inch or two from the top, keep using this product and have patience, you will not believe it!! THANK YOU!!!
Beth from Morris, just got your clay today in the mail, because of different emails with my account, my name is whitefinch, im shocked at what it did, I thought it took a while to work. but I got it around 4p.m. and it is 9:20pm and the water is almost clear, like drinking water. I can't say all this in the response, but wow. this stuff is good. Thank you for having such a great item for people like me to get.
Thank you,
Misty bought 5lbs of bentonite from you about 3 weeks ago. My new KOI pond had a very bad case of string algae.
I was willing to try anything. I can't believe how it got rid of the string algae. It was so thick that it was killing my water lillies. (I live in florida and my pond is always in the sun).
After the sting algae died off my water was like green pea soup. Another two weeks using the bentonite a few times a week and it has cleared up. Can see my fish now.
Only problem I had was my underwater pump keep getting clogged up with the dead string algae but that has stopped now.
GREAT STUFF
Ed in Florida Great customer service!!!
Actually, I might be able to help your business. I am the garden writer for the local newspapers from West Seattle to Federal. I'm also the coordinator for the Burien Garden Tour (and 1997 winner of the Pacific Gardens Contest for my pond). Perhaps a mention of pond management in a future column would be useful to you???
