Japan Radio JRC NRD-525 SW AM SSB CW Radio Receiver ***NICE UNIT***:
$674.95

This sale is for a JRC NRD-525 receiver ingreat overall condition. There are some minor marks to the covers....this is very common with the 525 receivers as the enamel paint was easily scratched.....but nothing serious as is often found and this receiver is in above average cosmetic condition with the exception of the wording in the \"timer\" on the front panel.

Electronically, the receiver works beautifully with excellent sensitivity and has no shortcomings or operational issues recognized during testing.

The receiver comes withan original user manual, a copy of the service manual, a couple of reviews including the outstanding Whitepaper review, information regarding modifications, a copy of the brochure, a couple of copies of advertisements, and a binder that has excellent copies of both the user and service manuals. The power cord is also included and this will enable you to power the receiver using a variety of AC power options regardless of your location. You may need to replace the wall plug if you live outside the USA, but otherwise should be fine. Finally, the sale comes with a CD that contains the manuals, reviews, and many other files that will be helpful for the new owner.

In using this NRD-525, Iam reminded just how well this receiver is designedwith the ergonomics controls. It is very well laid out and the user-friendly design makesit a joy to operate.

The sensitivity on this 525 was amazing and I was able to easily get considerable reception using only a test whip that I plugged back into the PL-259 socket.

One of the complaints I have read concerning these 525\'s is the fidelity using the onboard speaker. Frankly, the fidelitywas not great, but seemed no different than that found on many of the other communications receivers that I regularly test. Virtually all receivers can benefit from an external speaker and this unit is no exception, but the onboard speaker seemed acceptable to me as I tuned around. From what I have read, improvement can be found in fidelity using a set of headphones or an external speaker, if desired.

The following is a bit of history of the Japan Radio Company andreceiver. (asterisks * are placed to prevent accidental keyword spamming tocomply with \'s listing policies)

In 1977, Japan Radio Co. had introduced it\'s first radio intothe consumer market for shortwave enthusiasts. JRC had a long history ofmanufacturing commercial and military equipment and now began it\'s foray into amarket dominated by the names such as C*ollins and Dr*ake. The initialintroduction, the NRD**505, reportedly made less than 1,000 units and thisreceiver broke new ground for enthusiasts with it\'s high construction standardsand precise digital readout. Cost of this receiver was over $2,200 which was atidy sum of money in the 70s.

The NRD**505 was followed up by the NRD**515 in 1979 which wascontinued into 1986 when JRC introduced this outstanding NRD-525. One of thepreeminent shortwave experts and testers is a guy by the name of Larry Magne. Manyof you who have read Passport\'s reviews over the past couple of decades haveseen Larry\'s work. He is also largely responsible for the collection ofinformation in the Radio Database Int\'l whitepapers that give much moredetailed reports on a range of popular and high end communication receivers.Regarding the NRD-525, Larry wrote \"it must be said that the NRD-525 is asclose to the optimum shortwave listener\'s receiver as is in existence\" and\"Japan Radio has taken the features shortwave listeners have alwayssought....and packaged the lot into what is unquestionably the best overallshortwave listener\'s receiver on the market today\" and finally \" theNRD-525 exemplifies once again that Japan Radio receivers are for theconnoisseur.\"

Larry\'s words are over 15 years old so have to be consideredwith available receivers from that era, but it is not improper to compare thisclassic receiver to it\'s piers of that vintage and come up with the enthusiasmthat Larry found with this NRD-525. Here is a list of the features on thisreceiver:

·Exceptional sensitivity of less than .5 uv 1.6- 30.0 mhz SSB

·Coverage from 90 khz on up to 34 mhz

One of the things that most impresses me about these Japan Radioreceivers is the quality of manufacture. I regularly remove the covers when Iclean the cabinets and this allows me to blow out any accumulated dust andlubricate controls when necessary. You can see the modular construction withlabels along the bottom edge showing what is installed and what is open foraccessory boards. Here is what the chassis looks like on another receiver (I forget to take a picture of this chassis when the cover was off, but the appearance is virtually identical):

In addition, all the knobs are removedto carefully clean them andto better access the front panel for cleaning. With the NRD-525, I wasimpressed with the weighted tuning knob that weighed on my postal scale at 6.1oz and the quality machining using 6 screws to attach the skirt to the knob.Common knobs are either plastic or inexpensively made, but JRC seemed to spareno cost in even this detail as seen here:

At this point, I want to share with you some other availableinformation found on the web concerning this 525 model. You can look at reviewsfrom other users here on eHam.net and please note that the 12 reviewers gave ita 4.8 out of 5:

There is a Yahoo user group for the NRD-525 and NRD*535receivers that answers questions, gives mods, and other info here:

And this site gives some basic info on the NRD-525 giving it afull 5 H\'s (below the listing for the NRD*515):
