INFINITY 10\" woofers with new surrounds for rare ES-300, ES-103 speakers—superb For Sale -

Offered for your consideration is a pair of Infinity #64996 10 inch woofers from my ES-300 speakers, manufactured c.1985. These drivers were also used in the Efficiency Standard ES-103 which are practically identical to the ES-300. They may also be suitable for other Infinity speakers from that time period, the SM models in particular, but you’ll need to make that assessment.

So, please have a look at my large photos, measurements, and read the remaining description to decide if these superb woofers are correct for your needs.

These woofers are in clean, outstanding condition. The sturdy paper cones are absolutely flawless, with only some edge staining from the factory hot glue, and the textile voice coil dustcaps are perfect as well. Plus, the black-anodized steel baskets are in great shape as well with no dings, scratches, or oxidation. Most importantly, the aged original factory foam surrounds were just replaced.

As I’m sure you know, most U.S. speaker companies used foam for their woofer surrounds from the mid 1970’s to 1990’s. Foam offers superior excursion to coated linen and rubber surrounds, but invariably rots and falls apart in 12-20 years no matter what climate you live in. These woofers were no exception as the surrounds were breaking at the edges and rot had begun. Proper cone suspension is very important—if you play woofers with faulty surrounds for too long they’ll start to rub the voice coils and ruin them in a short time, so surround replacement is critical for properly functioning speakers. Most people don\'t even realize their surrounds had exceeded the useful life span until the cones start flopping around at volume, producing distortion.

Some of you have replaced woofer surrounds before, so you know it’s a time-consuming process that takes a great deal of patience and a steady hand. First, I removed the plastic flange gaskets which was very difficult to do without damage because of the strong adhesives used during assembly. Next, I carefully cleaned the cones’ edges and basket flanges to remove the old gummy foam and stubborn factory epoxy, which takes some time to do correctly, and then glued the inner surrounds to the cones. Then, I glued the outer surrounds to the basket flanges after verifying no coil rub. Lastly, the flange gaskets were reapplied. I allowed overnight drying of the acrylic glue between each of the steps to achieve the perfect results you see here. Now these woofers are in great shape once again—perhaps even better than new with the modern polyether foam surrounds!

These woofers have been fully tested after refoaming and sound terrific—very clear with fast, detailed lower midrange and solid bass response. Plus, I tested their DC resistance at a perfectly-matched 4.1Ω each, consistentwith a nominal 4 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the basket flanges (incl. the plastic covers) measure 11” diameter, they stand about 4 ¾” tall, and the mounting hole distances are 6 13/16” adjacent / 9⅝” diagonal, center-to-center.
