In Vodoun, or Voodoo, gris-gris resemble charms or talismans which are kept for good luck or to ward off evil.
The origin of the word is unclear, but some scholars trace it to juju, the West African name for fetish or sacred object. Juju may be a European translation for the expression grou-grou (hence gis-gris), or it may refer to the French word joujou, which meant "doll" or "plaything." Most of the African fetishes were shaped like dolls, and early Europeans on the African West Coast may have mistaken serious religious objects for innocent looking poppets.
The gris-gris became traditional in New Orleans, the American headquarters for voodoo, where they were used for various things such as attracting money and love, stopping gossip, protecting the home, maintaining good health and achieving innumerable other ends. At one time, every police officer was known to carry a gris-gris for protection.
Legends concerning the famous New Orleans Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau claim her gris-gris contained bits of bone, colored stones, graveyard dust (also called goofer dust), salt, and red pepper. Other more elaborate gris-gris were made of bird nests and horse hair weavings.
Since my mother's death I've created many Day of the Dead themed paintings, drawings, sculptures, shrines, and jewelry pieces. Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is a Mexican tradition for celebration andremembering loved ones who've passed on to the next life.

The Voodoo dolls shown here are samples. You will receive ONE (1) talisman gris-gris doll chosen at random. Each is one-of-a-kind, none are exactly alike -- all are special. The elements I use to create the dolls are bone, coral, turquoise, amethyst, carnelian, black onyx, aventurine, shell, lapis, jasper, quartz, pyrite, horn, salwag, buri, black coconut, seed pods, volcano lava, clay burial beads, wood, vintage glass beads, and mixed metals. The carved skulls of the dolls are ox bone (no animals were harmed). The talisman gris-gris doll is on a large silver bail which will fit most any necklace chain.
You'll receive a free necklace cord for your talisman pendant. You can choose between a black silknecklace or black corduroy necklace. Let me know your preference. Thenecklace measures 18" and has a lobster clasp,plus a1-1/2" extension chain with engraved signature tag, skulland star-- so sexy on the nape of the neck.
