HISTORY

Strike a pose at the helm of the H.M.S. Surprise just like Russell Crowe as Captain "Lucky Jack Aubrey." The ship used in the academy award winning film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World has found a permanent home at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. The H.M.S Surprise is a magnificent replica of an 18th century Royal Navy frigate.H.M.S. Surprise is a 179-foot full rigged ship. Her designers and builders made a painstaking effort to recreate a 24 gun frigate of Great Britan's Nelson era Royal Navy. The result is a replica vessel unmatched in its authenticity and attention to detail. Originally christened H.M.S. Rose when she was launched in 1970, she served as a sail training vessel operating out of several East coast ports for over 30 years. the ship underwent extensive modifications for the production of the film in 2002. The museum acquired the ship in October, 2004. Plans include restoring the ship to seaworthy condition.

HMS Surpriseis a moderntall ship, built atLunenburg,Nova Scotia, Canada asRosein 1970 to aPhil Bolgerdesign based on the original 18th-century BritishAdmiraltydrawings. She is based onHMSRose, a 20 gunsixth-ratefrigatebuilt in 1757.

Rosewas built at theSmith and Rhulandshipyard in Lunenburg, a yard which had established a reputation for large and successful replicas such as HMSBountyin 1960 andBluenose IIin 1963.

The ship was inspected and certified by theUnited States Coast Guard. She spent the first ten years of her life in Newport, Rhode Island sailing in Newport Harbor and as a dockside attraction. In 1985, already in serious disrepair, she was purchased by Kaye Williams and brought to Bridgeport, Connecticut, and operated as asail trainingvessel in the 1980s and 1990s, run by the HMS Rose Foundation based inBridgeport,Connecticut,United States. Although she is known by the national prefixHMS, meaning Her (or His)Majesty's Ship, she is not technically entitled to it as she does not hold a royal warrant.

She was sold to the20th Century Foxfilm studio in 2001 to be used in the making of the filmMaster and Commander: The Far Side of the World, in which she portrayed theRoyal NavyfrigateSurprisewith a story based on several of the books byPatrick O'Brian. After the film was complete, the ship was leased and then purchased by theMaritime Museum of San Diegowhich has restored her to sailing condition as of September 2007.[1]The ship has officially been re-registered asHMS Surprisein honor of her role in the film. She sails several times a year, often with the museum's other tall ships, the schoonerCalifornianand the 1863 barqueStar of India.[2]In 2010, she portrayed HMSProvidencein theDisneyadventure filmPirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.[3]
