DETAILS OF ITEM

This piece measures 4.63\" long. The Vajra is the quintessential symbol and ritual implement of Vajrayana Buddhism and the term Vajra means \"the mighty one\" in Sanskrit and Dorje in Tibetan that means \"hardness and brilliance.\" The Vajra essentially symbolizes the impenetrable and invincible state of enlightenment.

In Hindu mythology, Vajra originally meant a diamond hard thunderbolt, a destructible weapon of the sky God Vedic. Sakyamuni then took the Vajra and rendered the weapon to a peaceful Buddhist scepter by forcing the wrathful open prongs to close. The Buddhist Vajra was born by absorbing the indestructible power of the thunderbolt.

Buddhist Vajra comes in from one to nine pronged designs. It is depicted with the central shaft that is pointed at each end. This is a five prong Vajra and the upper sets of the five spokes symbolize the five wisdoms: The mirror like wisdom, the wisdom of equality, individual analysis, accomplishing activity and sphere of reality when consciousness is purified and the lower spokes symbolize five mothers. This piece was originally purchased in Japan a number of years ago but the origin of this piece is unknown. The condition of the piece is very good.
