EARLY 1900 VINTAGE RARE GERMAN DIRECT BLOOD BATTLEFIELD TRANSFUSION KIT This vintage rare battle field Direct Blood Transfusion kit is WW1 German manufactured and comes from a vintage medical device collection. The set is boxed or contained in the old style heavy gauge tin with a brass spring clip closure. This rare vintage medical WW1 German set for direct blood transfusion is in excellent condition for its age. These sets were uses by German doctors for urgent blood transfusion from a soldier to a wounded comrade sometimes right on the battlefield. This technique lost lots of lives due to improper blood typing, infection and disease transmission during the transfusion. Although in a lot of cases it saved lives. The defects of this process prompted the German Army to be the first to introduce the practice of registering the blood type of soldiers. This information (even for the US soldier) was carried on the \'dog tag\' information around the neck of every soldier and is still the practice to this day.The transfusion kit contains a chromed 2 point syringe with internal check valve so that it draws blood from one input in and the push transfuses to the recipient through the output (contains engraved direction arrows so user can not make an error). Also contained is a set of double distributor valves which are used in conjunction with the transfusion syringe. Also contains 4 separate special needles. On needle inserts into another and is called a Trocar a sharp-pointed surgical instrument fitted with a cannula and used especially to insert the cannula into a body cavity as a drainage outlet. These were also used to drain infection from the body cavity or a major wound. The other needles fit to the transfusion unit for direct blood transfusion.Kit also contains an array of 8 reamers of varying gauges for cleaning the instruments and were also used to open clogged veins / arteries.The plastic bag contains some of the old tubing which was originally used in the transfusion process but became brittle and broke. There are also 2 fittings in the plastic bag which fit onto the 2 (input & output) fittings of the syringe. Tubing would have originally connected to the 2 fittings.Please note that there are other Direct Blood Transfusion sets on . If you are a collector of vintage medical devices, you should view those first. There are not any available on in this untarnished, non-corroded, working, cosmetically fantastic condition.

I rate the condition of this set as excellent considering its age estimated be 110+ years old.Please note that this item has NO manufacturer marks or dates on the item other than the engraved input / output arrows.My research indicates the following:The term \'Made in Germany\' came into being thanks to the British Parliament which passed the \'Merchandise Act\' on August 23rd 1887 in order to protect the British market from German imports. The law required that all goods from Germany had to carry an unremovable mark with the wording \'Made in Germany\'. Today we of course know that the whole act backfired because what was originally intended as a branding mark finally became a free trademark and the epitome of a seal of quality or warranty for good value. And of course a few years later - especially after the revision of the US McKinley Tariff Act - manufacturers all over the world started to adapt this form of marking.On October 1st 1890 the Congress of the United States passed the so-called \'McKinley Tariff Act\', a law that was introduced by the 25th President, William McKinley. This law not only imposed the highest tariffs that the United States had ever placed on imports it also demanded that regardless of country of origin all items imported to the US had to be marked as such, \'FOREIGN\'. The act was later revised in two steps and while the first allowed the real country of origin to be used, based on the fact that Great Britain had already forced Germany to use \'Made in Germany\' for their goods. The second change introduced the regulation that only standard English terms and characters were legit after the newly-founded state of Czechoslovakia in 1918 had started to use foreign characters (see \'Czechoslovakia\' on marks (1918-1920).
