ERNIE PYLE Dec 28 1941 - Typed Letter Signed Hotel Californian Santa Rosa CA For Sale -

The story: Mywife’s grandfather was Carter Jones. He wrote a stamp column for the San Diego Sun newspaperand worked the presses during the day. He was an avid aviation collector and Ihave extended his First Flight collection but not with the pictures of theaircraft, engine types, and autographs of the pilots that he was also able toobtain. We also have many of his other items. So, we have a framed letter thatwas kept on his wall in the study. I had no idea what it was and just had itsitting with other items in a box. On the back of the frame is glued someinformation from the Time magazine about Ernie Pyle. The letter is typed on theHotel Californian in San Francisco stationary,location is Santa Rosa Calif dated Dec 28 with no year. (Note: Indiana State museum has a two page typed letteron the same stationary to his wife Jerry---I’m attempting to get an image tohelp date this letter) The letter is approximately 7 3/4” x 5 3/8” and I havenot removed it from the frame. There is some damage on the upper right corner. Carteroften went toMonterreyand lived in San Diego. The letterstarts Dear Carter, talks about receiving his letter, talks about heading northto Seattle forabout a month, heading down your way in Feb and “count on seeing you”, ends withBest wishes and has a signature in black ink. Carter either knew Ernie Pylethrough the newspaper or when he was taking pictures of the first flightairplanes since Ernie was also an avid aviator reporter. We have not found anyother correspondence but it seems they knew each other well and this hung onhis wall for 40 years.
