We are exceptionally pleased to offer this rare c1875 Chinese Straits silver pillow end.

One of many we are offering from a decades old Straits silver collection.

The Straits settlements were British territories in southeast Asia formed in 1826.

During the 19th century a number of Chinese trained silversmiths settled in the Straits. T.hey opened shops offering fine silver for domestic (not export) market. (See Ho Wing Meng, 1984).

Most all Straits silver was ornamental.

Straits silver pillow ends were sewn onto sides of pillows as part of the traditional wedding ceremony (See Meng). They would come in pairs. Always octagonal or circular.

This fine single example in octagonal form.

The center with what appears to be a Chinese stag in prunus grove.

Framed by Chinese flowers of the seasons and various Taoist symbols. Such as the Pilgrim\'s gourd and fan with fly-whisk along with incense burner.

This important Straits silver pillow frame is 6 1/2 inches and weighs 3 standard ounces.

Unsigned. We guarantee Straits silver, solid silver and of location and period noted.

In excellent condition. Rich silver patina. The beautifully hand engraved stag, flowers of season and Taoist symbols retain their detail.
