Beautiful Bronze by the late Christine Baldwin. SIGNED AND NUMBERED 48/50. \'THE SEAFARER\'. Smoke free home. It measures 13 1/2\" long, 8 1/2\" tall (to the top of Newfy\'s head) and 5 1/2\" at its\' widest base area. It weighs 17 pounds 10 ounces by itself (meaning not in a box with packing yet). Beginning in New York, she pursued her career thru Panama, Florida, and finally California where she residestoday. When creating her original dog statues, she spends several weeks to several months capturing the essence of the breed. Working in her small studio, she individually sculpts each dog statue in wax, allowing her to combineher technical skills and artistic talent to produce some of the finest dog art available. Chris selected the lost wax process for the execution of her limited edition bronze dog sculptures for its accuracy to her original sculptures and for the rich and solid appearance of bronze.
A two year apprenticeship in a major art foundry has given her the experienceand hands on abilities to fashion her own molds, pour foundry ready wax pieces, re-detailing for hot casting and apply patina to the final sculpture.
Chris\'s works can be found in many museums both in the U.S. and abroad as well as in the private collection of many A.K.C.dog show judges, celebrities, even Buckingham Palace!The lost wax process is a traditional method of casting in bronze which has been used by sculptors for over 5,000 years. Christine selected the lost wax process for the execution of her limited edition bronze dog sculptures for its accuracy to detail. When creating her original sculptures, she spends several weeks to several months capturing the essence of the breed.
Her bronze castings are a result of many hours of dedication and loving labor. The original sculpture is sculpted in wax, allowing Chris to capture the smallest of detail. After the original sculpture is completed, she makes a latex rubber mold, formed in two halves to encompass the piece. Once the mold has cured, the two halves are separated, and the original wax sculpture is removed, revealing the mold cavity. Additional wax pieces may now be poured, up to the limited edition number. Each wax piece is then hand to eliminate any imperfection and insure accuracy.
At the foundry, Christine works closely with the craftsmen throughout the casting process. Each wax model is coated with silicon sand with successive layers until a shell of adequate durability can withstand the heat and weight of the bronze image in the casting process. This shell is then heated to approx. 400 degrees to evacuate all traces of wax. Molten bronze at a temperature of approximately 1700 degrees is then poured into the mold and allowed to cool. At a workable temperature, the shell is chipped away, revealing the new bronze casting. She then applies patina to the final bronze. This entire process is repeated for each additional sculpture in the edition. The finished work of art is an enduring sculpture requiring minimal care which will bring joy and beauty into the lives of those who view it for generations to come.
