Extremely rare"one & only"

CEIBA & VIEQUES, PUERTO RICO

ENGLISH:

This is arare medal, impossible to acquire elsewhere. This is very particular piece, which is Morgan Dollar sized, and made out of bronze with enamel of brilliant colors, represents the rise and fall of the United States Navy in Puerto Rico. Its obverse features the beautiful logo of this Naval Station, its reverse showing the legendary shield of the Navy.

The Navy, which can trace its history on the island since its invasion by the U.S. in 1898 as part of the Spanish American War, had had several smaller posts around, such as the San Juan Naval Base in Miramar, which closed in the 1960's as the metropolitan area sprawled around, and the smaller radar stations of Sabana Seca, Isla de Cabras, & Fort Allen, all closed by the 1980's.

On the aftermath of WWII the U.S. Navy was provided with a large sway of land to the East of Ceiba, and North of Naguabo, which would also include about half of both the Islands of Culebra and Vieques, the biggest US military installation ever outside of the Continental United States, what came to be the USNS Roosevelt Roads. Such a thing, even though brought a short huge surge of temporary jobs for construction purposes, on the long run it imposed a great harm to the local economy, due to the fact it literally wiped out dozens of cattle farms and Sugar plantations, to include half a dozen processing refineries, and hundreds of smaller ventures, even disrupting the local communications, both by land, and most important, by sea, since the triagle made between the inland coastal base and the two islands became off limits to fishermen and passenger vessels.

Poor areas became poorer still, many younger people moving to work elsewhere, to metropolitan areas, or specially, moving by the thousands to the mainland US. The fact was that since many locals had very little education nor spoke English, inside jobs in the base were often given to family members of the military, but specially outsourced to private contractors from the mainland US, adding to the ever increasing operational costs of the base, which couldn't sustain itself, despite its huge size.

As the training operations began, bombing and raiding the coastlines of the islands became common wargames, it brought the use of real bombs, leaving thousands of hectares with a lunar, crater ridden lands, some with unexploded devices, and all spreading highly dangerous carcinogenics and radioactive debris, impacting both the wildlife and the environment. Nowadays, the amount of locals in Vieques and Culebra with cancer and all sorts of other maladies related to this is 5 times as higher than on the main island.

Because of this, the people of Culebra got together and demanded the Navy to withdraw in the 1970's, its lands owned by the Navy given to the Dept of the Interior for wild life reserves. Then, in the 1990's a Navy fighter bombed a populated area close to downtown Vieques, killing and wounding several, which got its locals together to petition the departure of the military. After much Commonwealth and Federal investigation, plus numerous manifestations and parades all around PR, it was determined for the Naval Station to close permanently, its current operations moved to Australia. I personaly spent 6 months working in it, and remember it as headquarters to the Navy's training missions with friendly navies of European and Latinamerican countries, and also home to many elite groups, such as Navy Seals Team 4, and a unit of Sea Bees Engineers. It also ran the best hospital in the Caribbean, probably giving better care then than the care many hospitals give nowadays in the mainland US!

Attached are some aerial photos of the installations in Ceiba and Vieques (currently that island's civil airport) These medals come from a small lot acquired. No idea how many were made. Buy now, leaving it for later may cost you not seen this item ever again!
