BRITISH NAVAL SHARKS-HEAD DIRK/DAGGER MID 19TH CENTURY:
$850.00

This Victorian-era BritishNaval Dirk is rare because it wears a Gilded brass shark’s-head pommel instead of theclassic lion’s head. I have not seen anotherlike it in all my searching; not to say there isn’t one, but if there is, it’swell hidden!

Besides the shark’s-headpommel, with beautifully etched teeth and gills, it has a sharkskin grip withthree strands of wire. The very straightblade, 18 inches long and 1 ¼ inches wide, is engraved on both sides with vinedfloral designs and a fouled anchor topped with a crown and sunburstpattern. The blade has a push-buttonrelease from the leather scabbard (missing the drag and stitching on the backside – otherwise complete). The front ofthe blade at the cross-guard has a langet with fouled anchor and crown, and issurrounded by a wreath.

The blade maker is signed “Firmin& Sons, Limited 154 Strand London”. It’sdifficult to read due to either light engraving or wear (see lastphoto). Also there is light pittingunder the langet on the ricasso, and on the tip of the blade.

This dirk may be one of akind, perhaps especially made for a British naval officer with deep pockets?
