This is an ArtNouveau pewter centrepiece fashioned as two stylised dragons supporting an ovalglass bowl in their wings. The bowlcould serve as a posy vase or for a variety of other purposes.
The origin of thecentrepiece is something of a mystery. Ithas been suggested that it is a product of Urania, the first Dutch factory ofmetal objects d’art that was located in Maastricht in The Netherlands; or maybeit was produced by Kayserzinn in Germany.Sadly there seem to be no marks to identify this work of art, althoughthe indications are that there is a strong Jugendstil influence.
The pewter centrepiecemeasures approximately 25.6 cm (10”) long by 11.5 cm. (4.5”) wide and it weighs963 g.
The condition of thecentrepiece is commensurate with its age, i.e. c1905. Neither the pewter nor the glass have beendeep cleaned, so I am reluctant to state that there are no defects. However, with the possible exception of thearea illustrated in the final image, it seems unlikely that there are any gremlinslurking.
