Used by wheelwrights and blacksmiths to measure the dimensions of, 1. The outside diameter of wooden wagon wheels 2. The inside diameter of steel bands or shoes for the wheel.It also was used to match an existing finished wheel with the new replacement wheel size. It was probably used for other measuring as well, flume building, barrels or cylinders? It bears no "makers mark" so I'm assuming it was "shop-made". Probably in 1800's (at least considering family "history")This unit was "allegedly"used by my paternal grandfather and his grandfather.It is in "patina" condition and has a movable pointer on the 24" scale(hand stamped and engraved, numeral font is old)cast brass or bronze wheel (7.96" dia.).The handle/yoke appears to be hand forged iron/steel (magnetic) (9") in perfect shape/condition. Weighs about 2 lbs.
