Antique Si Satchanalai Pottery Sherd of Buddha\'s Face. Circa 19/20th C.

Description: Antique 19th to 20th century handcarved red unglazed Earthen Pottery Sherd of a Buddha\'s Face, from the kilns located along the Yom River, at Tambon Muang Kao, Si Satchanalai county of northern Thailand.

The fragment is an iconographic representation of a traditional meditating Buddha\'s face, beautifully characterized by his serene downcast expression and smiling mouth with contoured lips, arched eyebrows set above eyes like lotus petals, prominent nose and a well-shaped mouth, defined by double lines as if framed by a second set of lips.

The sherd was re-shaped and ground at the outter edges, and decorated in an overlayment of gold lacquer paint, while the reverse maintains the original kiln fired red clay appearance. The overall condition is excellent, with minor pitting of the surface being a normal part of the sherds patina, attesting to its age and use.
