Recognization Poisonous
snake with rear fangs. Total length up to 700mm. Yellowish-brown above,
scattered with black spots arranged in longitudinal rows, the outermost
scale row black, outer 2nd and 3rd rows white; belly yellow, the
anterior margin of each ventral scale with black. Head depressed,
scarcely distinct from neck; eyes small with vertical pupil; nostrils on
the upper surface of the snout, nasals in contact with one another;
single internasal behind them; one pre-and two post-oculars; temporals 1
+ 2; supralabials 7 (8, 9), in 3 - 1 f 3 (4, 5) formula. Body
cylindrical, dorsal scales smooth, in 23(25)- 23 (25)- 19 rows; ventrals
139-155; anal divided. Tail short, subcaudals 38-51 pairs.
Local Range Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi , Hainan, Hong Kong, Hubei , Jiangsu,
Jiangxi, Taiwan, and Zhejiang.
Biology Inhabits
rice fields, irrigation canals and ditches, ponds, and their vicinity.
Active during daytime as well as at night. Feeds on fishes and frogs.
Ovoviviparous, produces from 3 to 13 young during August and September, the total length of young just after birth being100-150mm.
Current Status
Southern Chinese people have had the custom to make gruel with water
snakes. And they believe that water snake has a certain therapeutic
significance. Thus it has been killed in large numbers every year.
Moreover, they were also killed by pesticides and chemical fertilizers
in their habitats. In addition, many rice fields were changed for
construction purposes, leading to reduction in habitat of Chinese water
snakes.
Protective Measures and Suggestion
Based on detailed surveys to determine whether the Chinese water snake
is beneficial or harmful to mankind, and it abundance, then it will be
time to work out appropriate conservation measures.
Enhydris
species are generally very hardy snakes that are not difficult to keep.
However, their needs are somewhat specialized compared to the husbandry
of most types of Watersnakes. These Chinses watersnakes are almost 100%
Aquatic. Unlike most types of watersnakes-These guys really love the
water. They live in conditions that are water and 100% humidity. They
don't develop the dreaded "water blisters" that most other watersnakes
do.
