6th Pl. Tintype - Civil War Trans-Miss. Confederate Captain - Found in Texas For Sale - New and Used

Sixth plate Tintype by unidentified artist. I found this tintype at a Northeast Texas outdoor antiques and junk fair. There is absolutely no identification with it whatsoever. The guy I got it from bought it from a man at a flea market in northern Mississippi, but there was never any identification with it. The officer is a salty-looking individual and his uniform jacket has three rows of buttons and three buttons on his sleeve cuffs. He wears captain's rank insignia on his shoulders that is patterned after Federal insignia.His uniform appears to be a very dark blue and photographs almost as black. It is difficult to see, but there is horizontal tape running horizontally across his chest between the buttons. This follows the pattern of uniforms in the Army of Mississippi before it was incorporated into the Confederate States forces, but doesn't necessarily mean that he is a Mississippi Volunteer. Obviously, this tintype needs more research, but after studying and collecting Confederate images for over 35 years, I feel comfortable stating that this is a Confederate volunteer from a state west of the Mississippi River. There are a few spots here and there on the plate, but nothing distracting. Housed in a complete composition case that is NOT split at the spine. Overall Very Good Condition and Guaranteed Original.
