Red Mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) are a tropical shoreline plant often associated with sea grass and coral reef ecosystems. They are an efficient, natural filter for Nitrates, Phosphates and other organic aquarium wastes that can cause unwanted algae growth in a marine aquarium. Many aquarists use them in refugiums as part of the Wet/Dry or Trickle Filter Setups. They are able to survive in salt, brackish, and freshwater. The propagules (seed pods) are harvested from private property and beach wrack. Propagules will be around 5\" to 8\" in height. To grow, simply put seeds in water or refugium, 12 hours of light is recommended using broad spectrum grow lights or LED lights. Seeds should begin to grow roots and shoots in a 1 to 3 weeks depending on lighting, nutrient load and salinity. Red Mangroves are a tropical species that cannot withstand temperatures under 40 degrees for extended periods of time. They can also make an attractive desktop plant as the will grown in Fresh or Salt Water as well as in well moistened soil. They can also be made into Bonsai Trees by experienced practitioners

Mangroves naturally excrete salt from the water they utilize so they need to have their leaves sprayed daily so that the salt does not wilt the leaves, in the wild normally rains and dew conditions help to control the salt on the leaves. Use de-chlorinatedor distilled water to mist the plants. The salt will be recycled in the water. When putting in the refugium you can push them down an inch or two to keep them upright, the roots will stabilize them once they begin to grow.

Propagules are sent in a padded envelope USPS ground.

NOTE: Seeds in the picture are not the exact seeds you get. They will be similar in size and shape ready to plant.
