Odor Control on Artificial Grass, Synthetic Turf, Horse &Swine Stalls/Trailers, Attics, Basements

ZeoFill® is the #1 choice for synthetic turf infill for pet owners.

What is Artificial Grass Infill?
Infill is used between grass blades for lawns that aren't real or artificial. Infill is spread down into the turf fibers to help the blades of grass stand up. It also protects the grass backing from ultraviolet rays which could eventually cause damage and void warranties. Some artificial grass infill options are ZeoFill®, Envirofill, Durafill, Silica Sand and/or Rubber.

For years there has been a struggle for pet owners to decide if artificial grass is beneficial for their dog. Since majority of dogs have accepted fake grass as their bathroom, their owners had to water down and flush out the urine bacteria from the turf. Many turf manufacturers have made antimicrobial pet turf to resist the bacterial ammonia from adhering to the turf fibers. Silica sand would hold ammonia urine resulting in a great deal of smell. A product call Durafill or Envirofill which is poly coated silica sand was created to resist the bacterial ammonia from adhering to it. Problems started to arise when the urine bacteria would embed itself into the underlayment of the turf. In the heat of the day, the urine bacteria smell would bake under the turf and cause a much greater smell. Companies would have to tell their customers to water down their turf once a week to get rid of the smell but never worked properly.

Solution: A product named ZeoFill® born in 2008 made out of a natural resource from the earth called zeolite. Zeolite is a negatively charged honey-combed molecular structure which absorbs the urine bacteria and prevents the ammonia from forming a gas which is the main cause of smell. ZeoFill® Infill will pull the urine gases towards itself like a magnet and hold it until sodium ion (Na+) in rain water will flush out the zeolite, forcing it through the turf into the ground making your turf virtually new again. The sodium forces the calcium ions out and recharges the zeolite when dry. With ZeoFill® there is no need to water the grass once a week to wash away urine smell.

ZeoFill® has been approved by leading manufacturers in the US to be used as an infill due to the purity and Mohs hardness it holds. ZeoFill® recommends it is best to be installed on top of the grass inside the turf fibers to help control the odors but installers who use a non-infill product prefer to use ZeoFill® under the turf which is not as effective and voids any warranty with ZeoFill®.

ZeoFill® helps control the urine odors but will not completely eliminate it. With any synthetic turf, you still have to maintain it by cleaning with an enzyme cleaner such as The Turf Doctors PE-51 to rid of bad bacteria that don’t smell but is embedded in the turf fibers. Use this enzyme if your area doesn’t rain periodically in a given year.
No matter how compact this infill gets, ZeoFill® will drain 100% never having to worry about drainage. A perfect solution for an artificial grass tennis or bocce ball court. It will hold over 55% of its weight and will evaporate water slowly over time cooling the turf in warmer weather.

ZeoFill® will not deteriorate in excess of limits over time making it a choice infill for sports fields, pet grass, landscape and putting greens. It is environmentally safe and a certified organic compound with no additives. Zeolite dust will not harm the body like silica infills. Zeolite is a known substance which is sold as an animal feed additive so it is perfectly safe for animals or children if swallowed.

You Ask, Can any zeolite work on my turf?
No, ZeoFill® is the only zeolite that has the right properties, hardness and purity level safe enough for artificial grass. There are zeolite mines all over the world but every zeolite mine has different uses, hardness, sharpness, and impurities including lechatelierite (which is molten glass), lead, chromium, silica, magnesium, and other negative properties which will not work with your artificial turf system. Other zeolites could also void the manufacturer warranty.

ZeoFill® has a purity level of 98% with no negative purities that could harm the turf fibers. Purity is the key to how much ZeoFill® you install either on or under the turf. Most zeolites are between 55 and 85% purity. You would have to put twice as much on your turf and risk that the impurities in these zeolites will not harm the turf or hope your turf drains for years to come.

With ZeoFill®, now customers can enjoy artificial grass without worrying about urine odor smell or manufacturer’s warranty issues.

Benefits of using ZeoFill® on top of turf vs. under turf:
ZeoFill® is beneficial on top of the turf. When your dog urinates on the turf, the urine will instantly be consumed by the zeolite granules preventing ammonia bacteria particles from traveling through the turf. The zeolite granule will hold the ammonia water until it is heavy rainwater flushes out the zeolite. The zeolite granules will be trapped inside the turf system and will not break down over time. 5 year warranty againstdeterioration.

Under the turf usage: If you use zeolite under the turf, it will be eventually consumed by the underlayment base material. When it rains, the small granules will travel downward making it more difficult for the zeolite to control the urine ammonia. Under turf usage is not warranted by ZeoFill®. It will be a waste of money and time. Because of the purity level in our product, ZeoFill® has been approved for turf infill usage which is the best choice.

Questions and Answers

What is in ZeoFill - Is it safe for my dog?
100% Safe for Children and Pets. ZeoFill is Clinoptilolite. 100 % NATURAL VOLCANO ASH , Absorbs moisture, Controls flies, Traps odors, No chemicals added, Absorbs ammonia, No perfumes, Environmentally friendly, “Regarded as Safe” (GRAS), USE as 100% natural fertilizer after use, AND no need to add more after installation and meets all E.P.A. compliances.

What if my dog eats the ZeoFill? What will happen?
If you dog eats ZeoFill, it will detoxify your dogs body by removing any metals from its body within 5 hours. You will have one healthy dog. ZeoFill sells to companies who feed horses, pigs and cows ZeoFill to help digestion and a finer mesh for horse medicine. ZeoFill does not sell for human consumption.

Will ZeoFill plug the holes in my turf?
No, because ZeoFill is permeable. As continuing flow of a water source like rain or water from a hose flows through the turf, the water will be absorbed in ZeoFill's porous, honeycombed like molecular structure then forced directly through it. When the water source ceases, ZeoFill will retain the moisture longer than other infills while still slightly maintaining the odor controlling properties.

When ZeoFill is wet, does cause mold?
No, mold grows were there is continuous moisture. Depending on the mesh size, ZeoFill will dry within a few days.

Will ZeoFill harm the turf fibers?
No, ZeoFill is softer than sand and will crush before tearing the turf due to the honeycombed structure but will last just as long as the turf.
ZeoFill is 4 to 5 Mohs. Silica Sand is 6 to 7 Mohs.

Will ZeoFill hold the turf fibers as recommended by manufacturers?
Yes, ZeoFill has been approved by all major turf manufacturers as a viable product to properly hold turf fibers upright and drain 100%.

What is a Moh?
The Mohs' scale of hardness, devised by Friedrich Mohs, a German mineralogist in 1826, was originally based on the susceptibility of a material to be scratched. When adopted many ears ago, only ten known materials were listed. Talc, the softest, was numbered No. 1 and Diamond, the hardest, was numbered No. 10 with other materials falling in between. Since that time, calcined and hydrate alumina have been developed and their place on the Mohs' hardness scale has been approximated.

How many pounds of ZeoFill do I need on my artificial grass to help control my dogs urine smell?
For the product to work efficiently to help control odors, it depends on the size of the animal.
For dogs 5 to 35lbs we recommend using 1-1/2 pounds per sq ft on top of the turf.
For dogs 40 lbsto 60 lbs, ZeoFill recommends 2 pounds per sq ft.
For larger or multiple dogs, we recommend using 3 to 4 pounds per sq ft.
If you have multiple large dogs on your turf, ZeoFill can only control the majority of the smell. Remember ZeoFill only helps control odors, Not eliminate.

How many square feet does One 50lbs bags cover?
Small dog up to 45lbs- One 50lbs bag covers 40 sq ft.
Large dog 50lbs or more- One 50lbs bag covers 25 sq ft.
Multiple Small or Large dogs- One 50lbs bag covers 15-20 sq ft.

NOTE: You must have enough product as specified. Any less will not work. (It's like a dog peeing on a diaper vs peeing on a band-aid) If the dog keeps peeing in the same location over and over again, the ZeoFill granule will not be able to dry.

What happens if I did not use enough ZeoFill on my turf?
If urine smell starts to accumulate, then you may want to add more ZeoFill.

How often do I need to replace ZeoFill?
Typically - Never. This is a one-time application infill if the proper amount is used on top of artificial grass. But if you have a few large dogs and only a small section of artificial grass, then if smell starts to accumulate, you might have to remove the infill and install a fresh batch of ZeoFill. ZeoFill can hold a minimum of 55% of its weight. If urine is saturated for a long period of time, then the negative property ZeoFill will not be able to hold the gases. Use PE-51 enzyme cleaner to clean the ZeoFill granules.

How long can ZeoFill hold the ammonium in its honeycomb cavities?
Because ZeoFill holds a minimum of 55% of its weight and is a negative charge property, the urine will recharge itself when dry. Majority of the time it will hold the gases until the sodium ion in rain water flush out the ammonium completely. Sodium ion in rainwater forces the ammonium out of the ZeoFill and into the ground. Once dry, ZeoFill will continue to hold any gases from escaping.

We don't get much rain, can I flush out the ZeoFill by hosing it off?

Mostly No, Sodium ion (Na+) in rain water will flush out the zeolite, forcing it through the turf into the ground making your turf virtually new again. The sodium forces the calcium ions out and recharges the zeolite when dry.
only sodium ion from rain water can flush out the bacteria. The sodium ion will release the magnetic power in the granule. Otherwise, ZeoFill works better dry. There are 100's of volatile odors that may come from bacteria...not just ammonium gas, not to mention disease-causing agents that is an issue ancillary to odor. When rain’s sodium ion forces the bacteria through the granule, it cleans out the system out so the process can begin again.

Note: light rain will release the mag-nativity of the granule but will not have enough force to push bacteria deep into the ground. There may be a smell during this time. Once the Zeofill dries, the smell will be removed.

Rainwater is naturally Ph balanced due to the presence of carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, sodium ions and sulfur dioxide found in the Earth's atroposphere.

Yes with conditions, Water from your home is purified by the city and usually does not contain the sulfur dioxide that rain holds needed to completely remove the bacteria from ZeoFill. You can water down your turf, just let the granule dry properly. It takes up to two day to dry. ZeoFill Granules works wet but needs to dry to continuously prevent the gases from releasing. If a dog pees in the same area over and over again, the granule will never dry and eventually release the gases.

If you live in an area where it doesn't rain for long periods of time, then it is recommended to use an enzyme like Turf Klenz or Turf Renu which is a liquid turf deodorizer which basically eats the bacteria until sodium ion in rain washes out the ZeoFill.

Is ZeoFill a better solution than purchasing a liquid turf deodorizer from a bottle?
ZeoFill does not remove bacteria. ZeoFill is a natural negative property product which holds the ammonium bacteria gases from escaping for months even years. Liquid Turf Deodorizers eat the ammonium bacteria with a enzyme solution which may last only a few weeks. EXAMPLE: Flowers are positive which gives out a smell. ZeoFill is negative which holds smell in. Can I use ZeoFill on my real sod?
Yes, because it is a 100% natural organic material, it won't hurt live plants. Natural grass is grown with soil, therefore ZeoFill will work its way into the soil and disappear. In artificial grass, ZeoFill will stay in the thatch fibers of the turf as long as the turf is on the ground. The thatch in the turf will hold the zeolite in place.

I have purchased a product similar to ZeoFill from another company. What makes ZeoFill better than the other company?
ZeoFill comes from the purest mine in the world. At 98% purity rate, other companies would have to sell you up to twice as much materials to accomplish the same odor controlling properties as ZeoFill. We also don't have any properties which could destroy or shred the turf fibers and ZeoFill will drain 100%.

Can I purchase volcano ash from another company and use it on my grass?
Sure, If you want to void your turf warranty! Every volcano ash sold in the world has different properties (DNA) and uses. ZeoFill now comes from the purest mine at 98% and has a hardness of 4 to 5 Mohs (Not hard enough to tear turf fibers) ZeoFill is the only company approved by all turf manufacturers in the USA.

What are problems with other turf deodorizer granules from other mines?
Beware: There are other Synthetic Turf Distributors selling zeolite that are not aware of the harmful impurities which could hurt turf fibers. Because dogs will run back and forth on the turf, the turf fibers are pulled and crushed. The impurities in the zeolite would rub against the fiber and can potentially shred them causing them to come out in chunks. Also, the impurities in the zeolite would compact and cause the turf to not drain properly.

The company that installed my turf last month recommended ZeoFill but I don't smell my dogs urine now. When is the best season to put ZeoFill on my turf?
Anytime is the best time. During the fall and winter months, pet owners don't usually smell their animals urine on turf. During spring and summer months when the weather starts to increase you will start noticing the smell or your neighbors will let you know.
