1837 - 1897 An Official Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Silver MedallionI'm offering this official silver commemorative medallion, issued forthe Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897 at a low 99p start with . Sir Thomas Brock was the engraver who designed the obverse (the old head portrait) and the reverse is by one of the very famous Wyon dynasty of engravers, William Wyon, chief engraver at the Royal Mint from 1828 until his death in 1851.You can see from the images that I've posted here that this isn't one of the best examples of this medal. This one was supplied to me without its original Royal Mint paper envelope or box so it is not surprising that it has a fair amount of wear and a few knocks and scratches which you might expect. So it's not perfect but at least it means you could pick up a good working example for less than usual. You can see that basically this is a very handsome littlemedal with an attractive aura - the familiar portraits of Queen Victoria, old and young and the inscription, incomprehensible to all but the well-educated, all lend an air of occasion to the celebratory effort. The medal legend is all in Latin, of course. The obverse, showing the veiled older head of the Queen reads: VICTORIA ANNVM REGNI SEXAGESIMVM FELICITER CLAVDIT XX IVN MDCCCXCVII - The sixtieth year of Victoria's reign draws to a happy end 20th June 1897.The reverse with its portrayal of the youthful bun-headed Victoria uses an abridged quote from the bible as its text. From Proverbs 3:16 LONGITVDO DIERVM IN DEXTERA EIVS IN SINISTRA GLORIA - Long life is in her right hand and honour in her left. This is the 26mm diameter version and it weighs 9.38g of sterling silver.This is a low start sale as usual.
