1874 Historic Chromo Lithographic MB Amusement Playing Cards Game Early Edition

Milton Bradley (November 8, 1836 – May 30, 1911) was an American game pioneer, credited by many with launching the board game industry in North America with Milton Bradley Company.

Born in Vienna, Maine on November 8, 1836, Bradley grew up in a working-class household in Lowell, Massachusetts after the family moved there in 1847. 

After completing high school in 1854 he found work as a draftsman and patent agent before enrolling at the Lawrence Scientific School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1856, he got a job in the locomotive works of the Blanchard & Kimball (later Bemis & Company) in Springfield, Massachusetts. 

After the company was shuttered during the recession of 1858, he entered business for himself as a mechanical draftsman and patent agent. 

In 1859, Bradley went to Providence, RI to learn lithography and in 1860, he set up the first color lithography shop in Springfield, Massachusetts. Eventually, Bradley moved forward with an idea he had for a board game which he called The Checkered Game of Life, an early version of what later became The Game of Life.

With 6 years of playing modified forms by Milton and his friends, this game was eventually published to the public which was advertised in the Phrenological Journal, proclaimed as a masterpiece for the family circle. Production quantities unknown. 

 Recently acquired here, I will offer this museum quality historic Milton Bradley Game for any serious game collector that will appreciates the completeness and comprehends the pure scarcity.

  Additional pictures can be offered if needed, edge/surface soiled, few cards with edge nips or abrasions, one card with mini surface paper tear, various stains and surface scratches on all pink backs.

 Slipcase leather lined box is surface worn, open faced book cover style card holder with decorated spine is acceptable.Slight inside spine foldout flex cracking, but intact.

 Instructions: Two sets, both have cover detach issues, one slightly scripted on front, will be mounted in archival cases, 97% intact, with minor damage from handling and game play storage use.

Scarce items only become scarcer, and as more people realize the joy of collecting playing cards and become serious collectors, the demand for old and scarce decks, especially ones in excellent or better condition, will continue to grow and drive prices upward!
