The Zapotec Indianslive and weave in a tiny village in the mountains between Mexico City andGuatemala, where they have remained isolated for2000 years. The villagers speak their own language andshare religious and cultural traditions with other nearby GuatemalanIndians. The entire village weaves -children begin their tutelage when they are eight or nine years old. The villagers continue to weave, alongsideother family members, until they are in their fifties or sixties. Generally speaking, the men are the masterweavers and artists and maintain responsibility for the overall designs and thequality of the finished product. TheZapotec Indians are one of the last remaining cultures in the world to completethe entire weaving process without the benefit of automation or modern science. The wool is hand carded and hand spun. The weave is tightly woven, with a minimalseparation when lateral pressure is applied and is highly durable to foottraffic. They are of a quality comparableto fine antiqueNavajoweavings. The dyes are prepared from indigenous plants, insects, and other naturally occurring products using secret recipes passeddown from generation to generation.
