The 2009 CFA International Cat Show is sponsored by the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA), the world’s largest registry of pedigreed cats. This year’s event is expected to the largest cat show on this side of the Atlantic, with more cats expected to compete than last year’s 729 entrants. Last year’s Best in Show, Grand Champion Kuorii Santos of Cuzzoe, a black Persian male, was bred in Italy and is owned jointly by residents of North Carolina and California. Santos went on to win the 2008-2009 "Best Cat" award for the season.
Each cat entered into the competition is evaluated by 6 CFA-licensed judges, who compare the cat’s features to a written breed standard for one of the 41 recognized pedigree cats. Breeds being represented this year will include the ever-popular Persian, Maine Coon and Siamese, as well as the less well known breeds such as the Cornish Rex and hairless Sphynx. Each breed will be represented by a booth with information about the history and personality of each breed, as well as an "ambassador" cat being available for touching. In addition, a breed presentation ring by CFA All Breed judge Joan Miller, will present informational talks about the various breeds, and also include the opportunity to touch and feel the cats being presented.
The world’s largest cat shopping area – the "Meow Mall" – will also be hosted at the show. The show’s largest sponsors, including Iams, Eukanuba, Dr. Elsey’s, Sturdi Products, and Royal Canin, will be accompanied by more than 60 other vendors of feline-related items such as cat toys, grooming combs, cats on mouse pads, speckled collars, cat trees, and jewelry.
"While all will come to see the most gorgeous array of cats from across the world, many will stay just for the shopping!" said Pam DelaBar, president of the Cat Fanciers’ Association. "The world’s largest feline mall, glorious cats from across the world, and for the first time, ambassador cats representing their breeds, promises the most fulfilling feline experience that has ever been seen before in CFA history!"
