My God, I don't believe it. Baby hermit crabs from a non-professional hermit crab owner. I can't imagine how that happened. (Please go look at them & report back. Post pictures.)
You friend should not, under any circumstances, "release them" anywhere locally. They are not native to the Chesapeake Bay or anywhere around here.
Hermit crabs are from tropical islands. They will freeze to death in Maryland. They eat coconut & dead fish & donkeys (really!) & live on beaches in the wild.
You friend should: Make sure there are small spaces for the tiny hermit crabs to hide if the big ones get too much for them. - Have a supply of shells for the hermit crabs to grow into - Make sure there is a very shallow dish so that they don't drown if they go into it.
(I thought that hermit crabs began life in the ocean - I don't understand this at all.)
Have your friend join the Hermit Crab Association pet board and place the hermit crabs through the postings:

Please have her read the breeding & care sections on the links that I forwarded to you.

Hah, I didn't believe it either. I'm only posting what he said. Thanks so much, I will definitely talk to him and send him the links. When I talk to him tonight I will ask him for some pictures and hopefully he'll show me. Then I'll post them here.
I was really confused by this when he told me. He's not the most sane guy and when he told me that Titan was just "caring" for some other crab's eggs I had to laugh. Personally I'm concerned for the babies so I'll definitely speak with him.
He did tell me he got some shells for them. But I will ask for an update on the little ones and report back.
Thanks again, I appreciate it.

As we probably all expected, I just talked to my friend and he says that all but two babies have died. He said he'll try to take a picture tomorrow but by then I bet the others will die too. I told him that it was gonna happen and he just said that they got "sick". He's already named them (sigh) and says that Titan was incredibly distraught by the death and has been making 'laughing' noises all day.
He loves to personify his crabs and apparently they are quite vocal anyway. I know my friend sounds really silly...like I said, he's not really "normal" if you can use that term. In his world, the hermit crabs understand what he is saying and respond to him.
