Against my better judgment we were forced to pick up Lola from her litter when she was just 6 weeks old. The owner insisted. I thought she was still too young. We have her father a Lhasa Apso. We have fed them the same except while Lola was a puppy and we gave her puppy food. But Lola has always been a chow hound. She is preoccupied with food. She has learned to sit before given a treat. Still she tends to grab at the food in your hand and is always on the look out should one of us venture into the kitchen. Gianni on the other hand sniffs everything before he puts it in his mouth and he doesn't act feverish about it. And she still jumps in front of Gianni when he's getting attention. And she still likes to chew on your fingers like a puppy. She is two years old. We love her. We just wish that she would settle down. We have always consistently and routinely fed them.

It sounds like Lola is reacting to her early removal from her litter. Was she the runt? Maybe some 'spot' training would help. While you are eating food train her to go to her 'spot' or 'bed' that way she isnt begging or trying to snap at your food.

You can also train her to stay out of the kitchen by walking her out of the entranceway. All you do is walk towards her, which forces her to back up. You do this until she is out of the area you do not want her in. Naturally she will follow you back in when you turn to go back so you will need to repeat the process. It takes a while for a dog to catch on but if you do it consistantly and keep up on it, she will learn that the kitchen is off limits when you are in there preparing food.

I did this with my two year old lab, because she literally would get on her hind legs and steal food off our counters. It took about 3 days for her to really comprehend. But praise for when the dog is doing the correct thing is always fuel for your dog, they want to please you, and they love praise :)

She is also still a very young dog, maybe as she ages she will also calm down a bit with the food obsession.

I hope some of this was helpful, keep me posted :) and good luck!

Thanks for your reply. Yes, Lola was the runt. I forgot to mention that she is really into licking us also. She's better than she used to be and stops more quickly. Thanks for the suggestions. I think you are right about being weaned too soon. She's really just started to be interested and bond with my husband and me. She was basically Gianni's shadow before and wanted whatever he was into at the time. Gianni's learned to hold his own with her now and he's more aggressive about inserting himself for his share of attention. He doesn't just go off and sulk anymore. And we're more sensitive to the situation.I will give it a go.
