My new hamster Ruby, seems very distant and is always hiding in a spot were you cant see her. and if you try to pet her she eather trys to get away or bites at you. not to hard but you can feel it. It seems like she is unsure of her new home and family. How can I get her accustomed to us?

Make a daily habit of sitting by her cage & talking softly & cheerfully to her, to get her used to your voice & presence.

Give her treats. If she won't take them out of your fingers, drop them near her nose. Eventually, she'll come to the treats, & also get to know your scent.

Don't push the petting. Some small pets just don't like it, esp. on their backs. Until she settles in, confine any petting to stroking her up her nose to between her ears, once or twice.

At least your hamster isn't insane. I had a gerbil who was psychotic & only came out of hiding to try to rip my throat out (well, rip my hand apart, anyway). I had to use gardening gloves anytime I got near him.(Really. I'm serious. He was born crazy & wanted to kill me.)

We tryed to give her food from our hands. But she bite my husband and made him bleed and keeps trying to bite me. Do you think she just might be hostile or anti social? Im becoming a sad hamster mommy
