I know my gerbils dying, i just would like to know why, shes gone off on her own and is sitting as far from the nest as possible, i know this is pretty much an iminant sign of death, shes become sluggish, eyes haf closed, seems to have severe palpatations, and rocks when she eats, shes also gone very cold, does anyone have any idea whats caused it? Im worried its tyzners disease and she could pass it to her cage mate, my old gerbil died of tyzners, he couldnt move at all and just shuffled around, shes a lot more lively than that and was fine yesterday. Its been very sudden.

when i was young i had a pair of gerbil brothers. they lived for about 4 yrs then one died - soon after that my other one became ill, i think with a stroke. when before he would run around and jump up my stairs, he suddenly could barely move, open his eyes or find the energy to eat until unfortunately he died about a week later. as i was quite young i went to the extent of making a tiny box filled with sawdust and chips for him to stay warm in, and hand fed him tiny tiny pieces of milk drops (so they could melt easily in his mouth) and small drops of water. he lasted for a long few days during this considering his state - and as soon as i moved him back to his tank he died :( so not much advice really other than to just try and keep an eye on him as constantly as possible and make him feel as comfortable and warm as possible too! also, take him to the vet if he is still in the same condition! Good luck

Hey thanks for the reply, she hung on, as the vets arent open during the weekends here, i was sure by the time i would be able to get her there, she would have died, she managed to stay alive until i got her to the vets, she has a respiritory infection and has improved greatly, she still has big troubles breathing but it seems shes set for a good recovery, I will keep updates on her condition, fingers crossed, she will be fine.
Also i am very sorry about your gerbils, i had an old gerbil Brian and he died of a stroke, my dad told me to just leave him, so i did for a while, his whole bottom half was paralysed, i put my hand in the cage and he shuffled over and put his paw on my finger. I was so moved i had to do something, it was kind of like he was asking for help, so i wrapped him up in a towel and stroked his head until i saw him stop breathing. Its very sad to see gerbils suffering, but i think it almost always end that way..
