My name is Jennfier, I am a married mother of one. We are advid Land Hermit Crab Owners. We currently have 18 and have started a Hermit Crab Rescue operation.
I have studies about the proper careand maintenance of Land Hermit Crabs and have opened my home up to ones who need good forever homes.
Our current set up in short is a selection of 6 tanks ranging from 30 gallon to 10 gallon. All with UTH..proper guages, substrate.. food and water set ups. lighting and mulit-levels and hiding places.
We offer our crabs all natural diets with no artificial ingredients most of the foods offered are either home grown or certified organic. All required tempand humidity levels are always constant.. all crabitats are kept in cleanand sanitized conditions. Crabs get weekly excersize several times a week.. outside of their tanks to allow for deep cleaning and fresh air.
We have 3 Isolation tanks set up for moulting or ill crabs.. luckily we have not had to use one yet.
We are running A Home For Hermie, Land Hermit Crab Rescue.. which is not for profit.. we get no outside financial aid from any private or public sector.. we support it financially ourselves with our own emoployment income. As a family we decided to undertake this in order to protect a creature that can not protect it’s self. They are taken fromt heir homes in their natural habitat.. forced into deadly painted shells and sold as disposable.. no upkeep toys.. when they are acutally required to have very specific condtions in order to thrive in captivity. In fact that is why they can not be bred in captivity.. the conditions are not right.. the oceans delicate ecosystem cannot be deplicated in a home in a way that is required for newly born Hermit Crabs.
If youknow of anyone who has these wonderful creatures and feels trapped by the upkeep.. feels that they are not thriving or threatening to throw them out of set them free.. please have them contact me and we will see about adopting them.
thank you very much!
Jenn
Mar 23, 2006 at 10:54 #486128That sounds like a really cool hobby! I don’t think there is as much goodwill out there to rescuers of animals like crabs as there is to our furry, cuter companions so all credit to you! Have you got any pictures? I’ve always been so interested in the more exotic kinds of pet.
Mar 24, 2006 at 1:29 #486129Thank you.. it is not a hobby though.. it is a calling, something that was put onto my heart that now is becoming our family’s passion. Yes I do have pictures.. below you will find the link. Since most of the family has allergies..this was the best pet but it quickly evolved. They harbor no diseases,(no salmonela etc.) bacteria and are allergen free.
