I have a 5 year old belgian & my boyfriend whom I just moved in with has a 8 year old cat who has never lived with any other animals. Sasha the cat wont come out from underneath the sofa & when I hold her with my dog around she shakes terribly. How can I help them cohabitate?

I have a 5 year old dog and a 3 year old cat, At first my cat was the same exact way. All I did to try and fix this problem was put my dog somewhere where it could not attack the cat(just to be sure) and then hold the cat in front of him and say a stern "NO" to your dog and spank him if he jumps at her, (by the way make sure your cat doesnt try and run and claw you in the face! its happened....) Just do that over and over..it wotked for me, it makes the cat not so scared

I would just let them get used to each other. It takes time. They may never be friends they they will learn to live peacefully together which is basically all you can ask for. Although many dogs and cats learn to be friends sometimes it just does not happen that way. If the cat acts scared when you are holding her be careful. She might feel trapped and attack you to get away. If she cowers in towards you then she is looking for protection. Gently pet her and talk in a low soothing voice telling her it is ok. She she struggles in the slightest to get away let her. A scared cat (I know from experience) is a nasty dangerous cat (I actually was scratched really badly and almost had to get stitches.) let her go. Other than that just give it time. Offer them treats when they are around each other so they associate being around the other as a good thing. And just let them sort it out on their own.
