Hire the sitter, with the sleep-overs. The dog will be happier at home, he'll have the whole house instead of a 4x4 ft kennel, there won't be any diseases to catch, & you can turn on the TV with Animal Planet or cartoons for company. And it may even be cheaper. Good dog boarding is expensive & can cost more than your hotel room per night!
It'll certainly be more comfortable for the dog.
And the sitter can text you on your phone with daily updates on how he did, or email you (assuming you check email when you're on vacation).
Hire someone who's licensed & bonded. Ask around the neighborhood or around the dog park & see if anybody has any recommendations.
