my dog ate something and can't get it out

My dog ate something (not sure what) he is trying to "stretech", and whines occasionally, and does not feel good. No vomiting, no diarhea. I would like to avoid a Sunday vet visit if possible to the ER for a stomach XRAY, I think he started feeling bad about 4 hours ago.
   
Any info would be helpful
   
P.S> I had this happen to a lab of mine years ago and he ate a tennis ball and had to have it surgically removed. This beagle doesn't eat non-frood items, like balls.
