My little shihtzu-pekenese mix is lactating and I KNOW she isn't pregnant. She rarely come into heat and the only time she is alone is locked in my apartment. Any ideas? Should I be concerned? She is almost 6 yrs old. Thank you.

False pregnancies are not that uncommon. But is not normal for an unspayed adult female dog not to come into heat twice a year. She could have a hormone imbalance, ovarian cysts or any number of other medical problems. The best thing is have her vet examine her and then have her spayed as soon as possible. Otherwise the false pregnancies are likely to continue and if she does have a medical problem it is likely to get worse, not better.

Thank you so much for your advice. It most likely IS a false pregnancy because when she DOES come into heat she is SO moody..just like the rest of us females. *smile* I will have her checked out as soon as I can and the spaying is surely in order as I don't plan to breed her again. She had one littler of 3 and was a wonderful mother...FOR ABOUT 1 WEEK! Then she was done with them and wanted to be the center of my attention again. She would even attack her own pups when they came near me or anything belonging to me.

Once again, thank you so much for your advice.
