leaving food all over

My four year old english setter has started to take his food from his bowl and drop it all over the house before eating at some future time, and often just leaves it for us to find and step on. He has always been easily frightened and we have tried moving the food bowl to other places in the kitchen, but he does the same thing.

It sounds like he's literally playing with his food.
   
Try feeding him less food at a time, so he eats all of it - 'cause he's hungry - before he decides to play with it. You may be overfeeding him, thus supplying extra to play with. You can divide up his food into 2 or more meals.
