once again...I have 8 dogs...6 of which are rescue dogs, some with abuse issues...and my two full breed springers are not only being bred, but are used for pheasant hunting...am I to believe that you can train an abused st.bernard cross that is afraid of everything to hunt??? And different breeds have different attributes that they were originally bred for, such as gaurdians, hunting or herding...you wouldn't use a doberman or pit bull for hunting or gathering your cows...IF people want a family pet that is strictly used for a "family" pet, than I totally agree about looking into shelters first, but if you want a dog for a specific purpose you need to look for a breed that is bred for that purpose...and people can certainly look to rescue groups for that breed of dog rather than a breeder...

ooooooo thats a very good point, yes it is possible to train a st. bernard mix to hunt even if it is scared. but it might not be the best the FOR the dog. but it is possible. you can fix behaviors such as being scared of everything. I have a dog now that has anxiety issues over everything that moves and somethings that dont. shes comming over her fears with training. but i wouldnt suggest having a st.bernard go hunting lol but if you wanted a hunting dog get a hunting dog. leave the saint for other people. they go quickly lol gorgeous dogs. anywho. you have a very very good point. if the dogs are for work than its good to have purebred working dogs for things like hunting and hearding but theres many mixes that work just as good. btw pit bulls are from the victorian era and were bred to heard bulls, but in that era dog fighting was becoming a popular sport so they used them for fighting. but occasionally there still are pitt bulls who heard cattle. same with dobbermans. it all depends on the upbringing of the dog.
