My 4 year old pom-a-poo gets spooked for no apparent reason. when it happens he will run to whomever is nearest to him, lay down real fast, then shake for what seems to be ages...no matter what you do or how you react to him. He started this as a puppy. we have other animals, including another dog, and they do not act this way at all. I thought he was hearing something or seeing something but the other animals would react as well (like they do when the door bell rings).

Anyone got any ideas?

thanks and Harley thanks you too!

My maltese does the exact same thing you're describing and like your dog, has been doing it since he was a puppy. I also have other dogs and they seem unaffected. Have you found out what may be causing it, because I really want to get to the bottom of this strange behavior.

Thanks!

Well, this is just a guess but some dogs have less confidence than others and I am thinking this might be a confidence issue.

I would recommend to both of you that you enroll the dogs in obedience classes.

It should help their confidence and also help you learn how to snap the dogs out of it.

For instance, if they spook, give them a command that they know or learned in the class and praise them if they obey.

I would recommend a one-on-one class for these dogs. The problem with the group sessions is that maybe in an hour you'll only have 10 minutes of the instructor's time and spend the rest of the session standing around while the instructor works with others.

This will be money well spent.

Good luck to both of you.
