Male Dominant

I have two male dogs. They are mixed breeds but predominately border collie, 3yrs old and a Cocker Spaniel,8yrs old. We got the cocker from the Human Society. The border Collie we got as a puppy, when a co-worker realized how much work is needed for puppies and so we took him in. They mostly get along with each other but occasionaly they fight over who is dominant. I think the young one is trying to push at the cocker. The cocker is more dominant over food but not much else. Just recently the border collie nicked the cockers ear. Is there anyway to avoid this dominance fighting. They have seperate bowls of food and we make sure to keep the bowls well away from each other. At this point we keep the bowls down on the floor. Would it help to keep the bowls up? But it is not only at feeding that they fight. They really don't seem to fight about the food, but position. I know having two males makes it more difficult but would hate to have to give one up.
