Best daytime companion for attention starved Pom

I have been working from home, which my 2 year old Pomeranian would prefer me to continue, but I will soon be gone for significant amounts of time during the day. He has separation anxiety and barks not for minutes after I leave but hours. I was wondering if a companion is a good idea and if so, what would be the rest route, older dominant male? Or possibly an attentive cat?
Thanks!
