I bought my mother a German Shepherd a few years ago named Reina. While she loves my mother and other family members, the dog has grown attached to me the most. She is age three years old and is a very unique dog. And by unique, I mean that the vet has repeatedly told us that Reina is mentally handicapped and that we should put her down to sleep. The disconcerting thing is this: Reina is so attached to me that she will often forget about her affection of other family members when it comes to protecting me. She snarls and growls at anyone who approaches my room while I’ll sleep. When I’m not home, she will snarl and growl at someone who gets to close to any article or item that bears my scent. The family loves this dog but she can be a little Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde with some of my siblings and parents. Is this behavior something that we could correct or should we attribute it to her mental condition as incurable and possibly consider putting her down? She is so overprotective of me and anything related to me that she is willing to attack my fellow family members. Any advice? Thanks.

Search for a profesional positive reinforcement trainer for advice. Look online for specialists on german sheps. for more advice and also last resort medication is also an option. I would get a second opinion with another vet, maybe one who specializes in sheps. Not all vets want to deal with this kind of situation. Search for all you options. For the safety of everyone, and the dog good luck.
