I have a cat also with long hair and I didn't believe this but the vet showed me how to comb the hair to get the knots out. You just get a fairly strong comb and as gently as possible just comb the cat and pull the knots out. Sounds like it would be painful but this particular cat let me do it. I am sure there probably put something on there to soften it up but I don't know what it is.
