My cat shadow is turning one in july we got him neutered in mid march. Recently he has been hissing and growling and my boyfriend and he gets super tense and only his back nails retract. And earlier today he would come to me and pee while hes tense and growling at my boyfriend. When he pees he's low on the ground or bed and the pee gets all over him. He's never been that unsanitary.

First of all see the vet to be sure he doesn't have a urinary tract infection.

I think it is unlikely but you want to rule it out, just in case.

He could be marking his territory, particularly if your boyfriend has recently moved in with you or is spending more time with you.

He is also approaching adulthood so some of it could be that as he matures his 'adult' personality is manifesting itself and unfortunately for you, he's becoming a nasty ass (hey it happens, they all aren't sweetie pies).

We had one that went from a cute, cuddly kitten to a crabby butthead who barely tolerated us and that was that. 'Crabby butthead' was who he was as a personality, just as there are some humans who fit that category.

If he is waiting for you to look at him and then peeing, well then obviously this is deliberate on his part and he is pissing inappropriately to punish you for something that ticked him off and this places him rather squarely into the 'turning into an ass' category.

Clean anything he peed on with Nature's Miracle or the like to remove the smell of his urine, otherwise he will smell his own pee and it is like a beacon screaming at him, "PEE HERE, PEE HERE, PEE HERE" that he can't resist.

The next time he looks at you, squats down and starts to pee, pick him up, scold him "NONONONONO FLUFFY, NO PEEING." Plunk his butt in the box and say "Fluffy pees IN THE BOX" and stay with him.

If he is peeing when you are not looking, then get a leash and tether him to you at all times. Now he can't slink off and pee the bed (or whatever) without you catching him, scolding him and putting him in the box.

If he doesn't like it, tough. He lost his freedom when he pissed the bed.

If he is slashing at you when you try to pick him up when he's peeing inappropriately, use a towel. Drop the towel over him and scoop him up. He will pee the towel so be sure to use an old one.

This SOB should not have free run of the house at night. This is only for good boys who use the box all the time.

Lock him in the room where his box is at night. If his box is in an unlockable room, then move the box to a powder room or bathroom at night. Put his box and food and water in the powder room, shove him in and shut the door.

Be sure to 'cat proof' the room first or he'll destroy what he can get his paws on.

As an aside, sometimes the behave inappropriately because they are seeking attention, in the same way that some children misbehave to get the attention of their parents on the theory that negative attention is still attention.

Try paying more attention to him and see if this behavior abates.

Also, try this. The next time he pees where he shouldn't and you give him the NONONO and put him in the box, once he has finished urinating in his box, ignore him.

If he is pissing for attention, correcting him and then ignoring him is the opposite of what he wants so he might stop. Don't make eye contact and lock him in the bathroom if you have to so instead of your attention he gets a time out.

Right now I think he pees and you are both in his face so this is 'working' for him in that he pees and poof! you are both giving him your undivided attention.

Good luck, hope he stops soon.
