Hi!
I have just adopted a beautiful wee moggy from a friend of a friend. She is roughly 2 years old and has (as far as I know) always been a house cat - although she does seem to have an interest in whats on the otherside of the door. Needless to say when we moved her from one flat top the other, she had a fairly traumatic experience with that one.
Anyway, things started off well - she seemed to be very inquisitive of her new surroundings and seemed as if she might settle in quite well. She has eaten from her new bowl and used her litter tray.
So far so good, you would think!
Shortly after we thought she was going to settle in she started to hiss at me and try to box/scratch my hand anytime I went near her. I seemed to be making a bit of headway but she scratched me quite bad when I was trying to give her a treat and Im afraid I hit her - thinking that she maybe needed to be put in her place. Anyway, this seems to have been a fruitless tactic because she wont allow me anywhere near her now. She just hisses like crazy anytime I stand up and scurries about in stealth mode all the time. She wont even eat the treats I give her!
I've not even had her 24 hours and she really hates me!
Please help!

Growing up we had a cat that we adopted and she took a while to adjust to us.
Honestly what we did was just leave her alone and let her come to us.
She's probably just settling a little slower than expected. I'd say maybe get into a habit of when you feed her- make sure she sees that YOU are the one that brings the food. That worked with our cat really well. It took her a good couple months to completely warm up.
If she starts coming near you and getting a little more comfy- don't ignore her, but I wouldn't smother her either. If there is one thing I can say about cats is that they can be rushed or pushed into anything- you'll only meet more resistance.
Good Luck!!

24 hours is not enough time for a cat to feel safe and settled. Ive adopted two cats from local Paws, Ive also taken in two strays. All of these cats took their time taking in their new surroundings. I can say honestly it sounds like this cat is overwhelmed, and basically freaked out.
Hitting her was not the right thing to do, im sure it was out of frustration but now you are going to have to give this cat space. You are her owner and she relies and trusts you. You broke that trust and now its going to be some time before she can trust that you arent going to hit her again. Cats are loyal and wise and not easy at forgiving.
I think my best advice is to just keep things quiet, no loud music or loud tv. Give her time to take in her new home, and dont force yourself on her, otherwise she will never give you the time of day.
