My kitty is about 4 months old, and she was adopted from a shelter. I love her dearly but she has to lick/kiss me with her raspy little tongue all the time. I cannot keep her away. It seems terrible that I'm annoyed with that behavior but it's so annoying. Any suggestions?

Soooo...might this be the first cat you've owned? We Cat People know about this sort of thing.

Your kitten is only 4 months old: she is a VERY young child, even a baby. You took her out of a big, crowded, scary place where hardly anybody played with her. You are now her Mommy & she loves you. She's grooming you because that's what cats do to each other. She thinks you're WONDERFUL!

She may outgrow it (mostly). Or not. It depends on how baby-ish the cat is when she's an adult. At least now, she needs to do this.

Let her do it for a few minutes, you can direct her tongue to your finger or hand. Then distract her with a string.

We, too, have a cat that grooms us (especially my husband) with the roughest tongue in the world. It's become a morning ritual. This is something cat people learn to deal with & live with because of what it means. Yes, it feels weird, but it's all part of having a cat.

In fact I've had cats living with me every single day since 1971. None of them has ever done this constant licking which is why I wrote to get some advice. Although Mimi is only 5 months old, she will crawl under the covers or find my arm under a pillow when I'm asleep and "kiss" me. I don't want to give the impression that I cannot possibly tolerate this but I do hate to be waked up in the middle of the night.
