I have a beautiful Rainbow Lorikeet. (green-napped) She has been living with us for just over a week. We purchased her a month ago, but were making daily visits to get her used to us and being handled alot, feeding her fruit and playing. The one thing I have noticed is that she likes to bite me. My hands or my neck if she gets the chance. I think it means she is bored, so I play with her more and a bit rougher and she seems happier. She has just started to play on her back and likes to be tickled. Also, she will get up on my shoulder (and this is only on the condition that I say "up up" and she dismounts) and will sometimes listen to me when I say up up, (she gets stubborn) but seems to listen to my husband more. She tends to want to be with me more than she wants to be with him. Also, we are trying to "potty" train her to make her mess on top of her cage in the play area or in a special bucket my husband made that is portable and has a perch for her to sit on. How long does it usually take to potty train this bird? Any thoughts on some of these issues I am having? This is my very first bird pet by the way and I am in love with her already!

potty training your bird is a good idea but may or may not take sometime birds tend to just realease when they have to and dont have time to decide so it coudl take some time and as for the bitiing your prolly right with the bored thing that or she is trying to groom you they do that to things thye like and the up up command may juzz take a lil time thats all and if she likes you better that cud be just she feels more love comming from you or she has more fun with you

RL are biters, loud & real clowns!! They love spending hours doing silly antics. Be careful with the biting though, don't encourage her to bite by being rough. If it's stopped her great, but if she bites again & becomes harder it may be better to avoid roughness & refuse to play only when she bites. If they're playful bites & she's young then she will definately eventually get carried away with her biting, but that's just a learning faze they go through & eventually grow out of if stopped asap. If you can read her body language it'll be easy to tell why she's biting so it'll be easier then for you to decide what to do about it. RL not only love to play on their back but also have been known to sleep on their backs!! The potty training is easy. Firstly the time it takes for them to learn depends on them. Just persevere cos it will pay off in the end. To potty train time when they need to go. When it's about the correct time that they're due to go to the loo, hold them over where ever you want them to go & give them a simple command & stay there until they've gone to the loo. Keep doing this over & over & praise her afterwards. Make sure you to 3 spots in various places of the house & all are easily accessible. Then she won't have any problems trying to desperately get to one place & the door is shut or something has happened. Good luck with her!!
