I plan on buying a parakeet for my 11 year old daughter tomarrow but I am concerened with the tempeture of my house. We have a wood stove that we use in the evening but the mornings can be a little chillie. I plan on covering the cage at night, but how warm should the house be before I take off the cover or take the bird out of the cage?

Did you end up getting your budgie??

California temps are fairly mild compared to most other US places, right? All birds are surprisingly adaptable to just just about any climate at all. As long as you keep the bird from drafts it should be fine.

Definitely cover at night as the blanket will keep the bird a little warmer over the colder nights. Taking the covers of & letting him out should be done every morning regardless of the temp. A sitting bird will chill. A bird that's taken out of the cage & encouraged to move around will warm up a little quicker. People allow parrots outside in the snow, they love it!! So don't let the cold stop your bird from doing anything.

since you have a wood stove just make sure the bird isn't near the stove. smoke inhalation will kill him instantly.

Don't let the temp get below 65 degrees if this the case it would be better to have 2 birds they will move close to keep each other warm.
